Why Is Perfume So Important?
How Do I Choose The Right One?
Image is everything, and we all like to smell good. When choosing a new perfume, we may try on a lot of fragrances before we find the one that’s right for us – the one that fits our mood and character. The right perfume is an important choice - fragrance can control our emotions and impact on how we feel. The importance of perfume has become wide spread, and perfume is found in every aspect of the media. Most glossy magazines feature several fragrance adverts for new or classic perfumes, before you even reach the contents page! Perfume manufacturers are prepared to spend £millions to ensure that their product enters your mind – paying large sums of money for prime advertising position, giving away thousands of free samples, paying the top of the A-list celebrities to endorse their perfume.
Image is everything, and a particular perfume will have an image associated with it. Certain perfumes are for ‘the free-spirited’, others for the elegant character, other perfumes for the lady who is delicate and sensual. Depending on the advertisement we see, we will link a particular perfume to a status or social standing – the perfume we wear affects how we view ourselves.
We wear different perfumes for different occasions – our favourite perfume is now much more than our favourite smell. A perfume for work, a perfume for going shopping, a perfume for a dinner with the family, yet another perfume for special occasions. Different scents match different occasions.
We function from the importance of our perfume. It is a commonly-held notion that perfume effects our emotions. Different scents affect us in different ways. A light, fresh fragrance can lighten a mood; a deeper, more classic perfume can make us feel sophisticated and elegant. Imagine the feeling of wearing a fresh new fragrance for the first time on a bright summer’s afternoon. Or the feeling of dressing up in an expensive dress, wearing that expensive French perfume, and heading out to a black tie dinner. The importance of perfume can set the mood for any occasion, not just in a romantic way, but also in a peaceful way. Some scents are designed to produce a tranquil effect, a calming and soothing feeling; other perfumes are designed to smell like the outdoors. The importance of perfume is detected everywhere we go and in about everything you buy.
Manufacturers recently have begun to fully realise the importance of perfume, as most of the adverts today focus on what the product smells like, not so much as what it does. While their adverts feature beautiful models or big name celebrities, they also describe the scent, or the occasion on which it is suitable for.
